Seasons
What to expect each season
☀️
Summer (Jun–Aug) — 10–14°C, 24h daylight
Iceland's warmest and brightest months. Midnight sun means you never need to stop adventuring. All roads open. Puffins nesting. Book accommodation 3+ months ahead.
🍂
Shoulder (Apr–May, Sep–Oct) — 5–10°C
The locals' favourite time. September brings the first Northern Lights plus 13h of daylight. April/May see dramatic waterfalls from snowmelt. 30–40% cheaper than summer.
❄️
Winter (Nov–Mar) — −2 to 4°C, 4–6h daylight
Short days but magical atmosphere. Best odds for Northern Lights. Ice cave tours run exclusively in winter. Cheapest time of year — 50–60% off summer prices.
Packing guide
What to wear — always
1
Base layer (thermal)
Merino wool is ideal. Even in July, mornings and evenings are cold. Synthetic works fine too — just have something warm against the skin.
2
Mid layer (fleece or down)
A packable down jacket or fleece. You'll put it on and take it off 10 times a day. Pockets matter for phone and snacks.
3
Outer shell (waterproof + windproof)
The single most important item. Iceland's wind is brutal and rain is horizontal. A proper hardshell beats a flimsy rain jacket every time.
4
Waterproof boots with ankle support
You will walk on wet ground, mud, lava, and glacier. Trainers are fine in Reykjavík. Everywhere else: proper waterproof hiking boots.
5
Hat, gloves, and buff
Year-round. Even July. The wind chill factor in Iceland regularly makes 8°C feel like −2°C. Don't skip this.

How to find the best fare
1
Book 8–12 weeks ahead for best prices
Icelandair prices tend to rise sharply inside 6 weeks. September and October see some of the best deals for last-minute bookings if you can be flexible.
2
Fly shoulder season — save 30–40%
April, May, October and November flights are significantly cheaper than July/August. And often better weather for photography anyway.
3
Use the Icelandair stopover trick
If flying between North America and Europe, Icelandair lets you stopover in Iceland for up to 7 days at no extra cost. Legitimately one of travel's best deals.
4
KEF is 45 min from Reykjavík — don't miss your transfer
The Flybus runs regularly to Reykjavík and is reliable. Taxis cost ~$120. Rental car pickup at the airport is easy — most companies are in the terminal.

Insurance
What insurance do you actually need?
🛡️
CDW — Collision Damage Waiver
Covers damage to the rental car in a collision. Usually included in the base price but read the excess amount carefully — some CDWs have €2,000+ excess.
Essential
💨
SAAP — Sand & Ash Protection
Covers damage from windblown sand and volcanic ash — unique to Iceland. NOT covered by standard CDW. One sandstorm can cost €3,000+. Get this.
Essential in Iceland
💦
GP — Gravel Protection
Covers chips and damage from gravel roads. Many Icelandic roads are gravel. Worth it for any trip outside Reykjavík.
Recommended
TP — Tyre & Rim Protection
Covers tyre punctures and rim damage. Iceland's roads can be brutal. Good value if you plan off-road or F-road driving.

Often sold as a separate add-on. Useful in remote areas but many credit cards provide this. Check yours first before paying again.

Rules
Things you must know
⚠️
F-roads: 4WD only, absolutely no exceptions
F-roads (marked with an F on maps) require a 4x4 with high ground clearance. Drive a 2WD on an F-road and you void all insurance and face a huge bill. The fords can be waist-deep.
🌊
Never drive through moving water
River crossings on F-roads are deceptively deep. Many tourist cars are destroyed every year. Wade in on foot first, and only cross if it's below knee-height with no current.
🛣️
Off-road driving is illegal and causes irreversible damage
Iceland's moss takes 100+ years to grow back. Driving off-track is illegal, fined heavily, and ruins the landscape for everyone. Stick to marked roads and car parks.

for Iceland?

Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Most visitors don't need a visa — but it depends on your passport. Check yours below.

Key rules
What you need to know
🇮🇸
Iceland is in the Schengen Area
Iceland signed the Schengen Agreement. This means free movement for EU/EEA citizens and visa-free access for many nationalities for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
90
90-day limit applies across ALL Schengen countries
If you've already spent days in France, Germany, or other Schengen countries, those days count toward your 90-day allowance in Iceland too. Use the official Schengen calculator to check.
📋
Visa-required visitors must apply in advance
If you need a visa, apply to the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration (utl.is). Processing takes 2–8 weeks. You'll need proof of accommodation, travel insurance, and sufficient funds.
🇬🇧
UK citizens: visa-free but different rules
After Brexit, UK passport holders can still visit Iceland visa-free for up to 90 days — but they are no longer EU/EEA and don't benefit from free movement rights.

🌊
Sneaker waves (rogue waves)
+

At black sand beaches like Reynisfjara, waves can appear suddenly from calm water and drag people into the sea. Multiple tourists die here every year.

  • Never turn your back on the ocean
  • Stay behind the safety barriers
  • Keep at least 30m from the waterline
  • Even on calm days — the pattern can change in seconds
🚗
Road conditions & storms
+

Roads can close within minutes. Always check road.is before driving. In winter, many highland roads close completely from October to June.

  • Check road.is every morning in winter
  • Download the 112 Iceland app — it shows your GPS location for rescue
  • Never drive around road closure barriers
  • F-roads require 4WD with high clearance — no exceptions
🌋
Volcanic activity
+

Reykjanes Peninsula has had eruptions since 2021. The volcano itself isn't typically dangerous to visit — volcanic gas (SO₂) is.

  • Download the Veðurstofa app for eruption alerts
  • Check for gas alerts before visiting lava areas
  • People with asthma or heart conditions should be cautious near eruption sites
🏔️
Hiking & glacier hazards
+

Never walk on a glacier without a guide. Crevasses are hidden under snow and can be fatal. Even popular trails can become dangerous in bad weather.

  • Never solo hike in remote areas without registering on SafeTravel.is
  • Always take crampons and an ice axe for any glacier walk
  • Weather can go from clear to whiteout in 20 minutes
  • Download OSMAnd offline maps before you go
🌬️
Wind & hypothermia
+

Wind chill in Iceland is severe. 8°C with strong wind can feel like −5°C. Hypothermia risk is real even in summer if you get wet and tired.

  • Always carry a waterproof outer layer
  • Have an emergency foil blanket in your car
  • Check wind speed (not just temperature) on Vedur.is
